Textile & Handloom Exercise 1.2.13
Shawl Weaving Artisan - Winding and Warping
Yarn winding for warp making process
Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• prepare yarn bobbins for warping
• calculate the total number of cones or bobbins required for warping process as per the number of ends
needed for a fabric.
Requirements
Tools/equipment’s/Instruments Materials
• Empty double flanged bobbin - 1 No. • Note book - 1 No.
• Yarn winding machine - 1 No. • Eraser - 1 No.
• Pencil - 1 No.
• Sharpener - 1 No.
• Yarn samples :wool - as reqd.
PROCEDURE
TASK 1: Prepare yarn bobbins for warping
1 Put the right size bobbin to fit in creel (140mm Fig 2
approx). (Fig 1)
Fig 1
4 Avoid overfilling of the yarn label and arrange
bobbins according to the warp sequence or pattern.
5 After completing the pre-determined length of the

with steady tension. (Fig 2) 6 Place the new bobbin and follow the winding process.
7 Observe all bobbins are evenly wound with consistent
tension.
TASK 2: Calculate no. of cones/ bobbins required as per no. of ends
Formula • Available creel capacity: 300 positions (For
example: creel can hold 300 cones at a time)
Number of cones
= Total number of Ends Calculation
Bobbins required
(Assuming one end per cone/bobbin and no multiple Step 1: Calculate the number of cones/bobbins required
unwinding from the same cone/bobbin) Number of cones
Exercise Example Bobbins = Total Ends = 1200 cones/bobbins
Preparing warp for a fabric with the following Step 2: If your creel holds only 300 cones at a time:
specifications:
Number of creel loading runs required = Total Cones/
• Total Ends Required: 1200 ends bobbins ÷ Creel Capacity
= 1200 ÷ 300 = 4 runs
